COVER, WITHOUT THE CONFUSION

What is fleet insurance?

Fleet insurance brings a number of vehicles together under one motor insurance arrangement. It can help a business organise vehicle cover and renewals in one place rather than manage an individual policy for every vehicle.

The minimum number of vehicles, types accepted and driver conditions vary by insurer. Some products are designed for small fleets; others suit larger operations. A fleet policy is not automatically cheaper, so compare both the cost and the practical fit.

THREE LEVELS. A CLEARER CHOICE.

Choose the protection that fits.

The cover level is only part of the picture. Always compare excesses, exclusions and the uses allowed by the policy.

01

The essentials

Third party only

Covers your legal liability for injury to other people and damage to their property. It does not pay to repair your own vehicle after an accident.

02

A little more protection

Third party, fire & theft

Adds cover for your own vehicle if it is stolen or damaged by fire, alongside third-party protection. Accidental damage to your own vehicle is not included.

03

Broader vehicle protection

Comprehensive

Adds accidental damage cover for your own vehicle as well as third-party, fire and theft protection. Excesses, limits and exclusions still apply.

Subject to policy terms, excesses and exclusions. The correct class of use still needs to be selected.

Availability and policy features vary. Comprehensive cover does not mean every risk is included.

BUILT AROUND YOUR WORKING WORLD

A fleet can take different shapes.

It is the vehicles and the work behind them that matter. Tell the insurer how your whole operation runs.

A small team of vans

Trades, service businesses and local operators may find small-fleet cover useful as their vehicle count grows. Minimum fleet sizes differ between products.

A mix of business vehicles

Some insurers can accommodate cars and vans together, and certain products accept other commercial vehicles. Eligibility depends on vehicle types and use.

Specialist operations

Courier, haulage, passenger transport and hazardous-goods work may need specialist arrangements. Describe every activity rather than assuming a standard fleet policy includes it.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE WHEEL

One policy. Clear driving rules.

Fleet cover may be arranged around named drivers or an agreed group of eligible drivers. Any-driver wording can still restrict age, licence type, occupation or driving history. Check that the people who need to drive meet the policy terms.

Keep the vehicle schedule up to date when a van joins or leaves the business. Tell your broker or insurer about changes before assuming a new vehicle or driver is covered; premiums and administration charges can change.

WHAT GOES INTO YOUR PRICE?

What affects a fleet insurance premium?

Insurers assess the fleet as an operation, while also considering the vehicles and people within it.

01

Fleet make-up

Vehicle numbers, values, types, weights and repair costs.

02

Driver profile

Ages, experience, licences and any-driver or named-driver requirements.

03

Claims experience

The pattern, frequency and cost of previous claims across the business.

04

How you operate

Mileage, business activities, operating area, security and overnight locations.

Keep good records of vehicles, drivers and incidents. Driver training, security and risk management may help your business, but they do not guarantee a lower insurance price.

THE EXTRAS THAT MATTER

Plan for the days that don’t go to plan.

These protections may be optional or need a separate policy. Check what is actually included before you buy.

Vehicle downtime

Ask about replacement vehicles and recovery. Check availability, vehicle sizes and any limit on how long a replacement is provided.

Tools, stock & loads

Motor cover does not necessarily insure tools or goods inside the vehicles. Check whether separate tools or goods-in-transit insurance is needed.

Legal expenses

Check whether legal expenses are included or optional, what disputes are covered and the conditions for using the service.

Breakdown & recovery

Make sure the assistance arrangements are suitable for each vehicle’s weight, size and use, especially in a mixed fleet.

READY WHEN YOU ARE

Get your fleet details together.

If vehicles have different renewal dates, discuss how a move to a fleet arrangement would work before cancelling anything. Avoid gaps in cover and check cancellation charges.

Fleet insurance FAQs

How many vehicles do I need for fleet insurance?

There is no universal minimum. Some small-fleet products start with a small number of vehicles, while others require more. Check the insurer’s entry criteria and compare them with the vehicles your business actually operates.

Can a fleet policy cover cars and vans together?

Some fleet products accept mixed vehicles, including cars and vans. Other commercial vehicles or specialist uses may need a different arrangement. Give the insurer a complete vehicle list and describe how each is used.

Is fleet insurance cheaper than separate policies?

It can be, but a saving is not guaranteed. Fleet size, drivers, claims history and cover requirements all affect the result. Compare the total cost, excesses and administration as well as the convenience of one arrangement.

Does any-driver fleet cover mean anyone can drive?

No. Any-driver cover normally applies only to people who meet the policy’s conditions. There may be minimum ages, licence requirements or exclusions for certain drivers. Read the wording before letting someone drive.

Can I add or remove vehicles during the policy?

Fleet policies commonly allow changes, subject to the insurer’s rules. Notify the broker or insurer and obtain confirmation. Changes can affect premiums, fees and refunds; do not assume they are free or automatic.

What level of cover can a fleet have?

Third party only, third party fire and theft, and comprehensive arrangements may be available. Whether levels can vary between vehicles depends on the product. Review the schedule and excesses for each vehicle.

Are my employees’ own cars included?

Not automatically. A private vehicle used for work may need business-use cover under the employee’s own policy or a specific arrangement. Do not assume that a company fleet policy covers every vehicle an employee uses.

When can I request an MYB fleet quote?

Any time. Use the Get a quote button to answer a few quick questions about your business and the vehicles you run, and one of our team will call you back with a price. The guides here help you prepare your vehicle schedule, driver information and claims history in advance.
