What does employers’ liability cover?

Employers’ liability insurance helps with covered compensation claims from employees who are injured or become ill because of their work. It covers a different risk from public liability, which concerns claims from customers and other third parties.

When is employers’ liability required?

Most employers in Great Britain must have at least £5 million of cover from an authorised insurer. Exemptions exist, and a subcontractor’s status depends on the actual working relationship. Check the GOV.UK requirements and HSE guide for employers.

Who works for your business?

Explain your staff, apprentices, temporary helpers and subcontractors to your broker, together with the work they do. Keep the insurer informed when those arrangements change. Check your certificate, policy limits and business description rather than assuming public liability covers your team.
