What does public liability cover?

Public liability insurance can help with compensation and legal costs for covered claims if your business causes injury to a customer or another member of the public, or damage to their property. For example, a claim might follow damage to a customer’s home while you are working there.

What is not automatically covered?

It does not replace employers’ liability for employee injury claims. Correcting your own faulty work, professional advice and property in your care may be excluded or need different cover. Check the policy wording, excess and any restrictions on activities such as work at height, heat or excavation.

How much cover should you consider?

Check the minimum limit in your customer contracts, the type of work you do and the possible cost of injury or damage. Available limits depend on the insurer and trade. Compare how each policy applies its limit and legal costs, as well as the premium.
