Public liability
How much public liability cover do I need?
£1m, £2m, £5m or £10m. What you pick usually comes down to who you work for.
Public liability covers you if a member of the public gets hurt, or their property gets damaged, because of something you did at work. The amount of cover you buy is the maximum the insurer will pay out for a single claim.
£1m of cover
The minimum most trade bodies and small clients will accept. Fine for low-risk trades working in domestic homes.
£2m of cover
The most commonly chosen level. Many local authority and housing association contracts ask for this as a minimum.
£5m of cover
Common for trades working on bigger commercial sites, or anywhere the cost of putting things right could be high (water damage to a block of flats, for example).
£10m of cover
Required by some larger contracts, government tenders, and rail or utility work. Check the contract you're tendering for.
