Van insurance

Modified vans and what counts

Bullhorns, light bars, racking, livery, alloys. Some need declaring, some don't.

If your van has been changed from how it left the factory, the insurer wants to know. Some modifications matter to a claim, some don't, and not declaring one that does can void cover.

Modifications that almost always need declaring

  • Engine remap or tuning
  • Suspension changes (lowering, lifting, air ride)
  • Wheels and tyres outside factory spec
  • Bullbars, A-frames, towing brackets fitted aftermarket
  • Roof racks and roof bars fitted permanently
  • Internal racking, shelving and ply-lining
  • Tints below the legal front-window minimum (75% light transmission)

Modifications that usually don't need declaring

  • Vehicle livery (graphics, sign-writing)
  • Floor mats, seat covers
  • Phone holders, dashcams (some insurers actually reward dashcams)
