Tools cover, explained simply

Tools cover protects the tools you use for work against theft, loss or damage. Most policies cover them while they're in the van during the day and at home overnight, but the small print varies.

Things to check before you buy

• Single-item limit. Most policies cap how much they'll pay for any one item (often £500 to £1,500). If you've got an expensive bit of kit, check it's covered.
• Overnight storage. Some policies require the van to be empty overnight, or parked off-road, or behind a locked gate. Break the rules and a claim can be refused.
• Forced entry rule. Most policies only pay out if there's evidence of forced entry. Leaving the van unlocked is usually not covered.
